First Food!!

Yesterday we gave Aashini food for the first time :) Here she is before we gave her food (in her AWESOME "My Mom Rocks" bib :)). She had no idea what she was in for...
We started with Rice Cereal.... She wasn't sure what to think...
And the verdict... Not so sure about the taste...
... but it sure is fun!
Then she decided that she wanted to help...
Then she took over the spoon...
And she didn't want to give it up :)
Overall, I think she enjoyed her eating time :)
Today was the second time we fed her. We made the rice cereal a little thicker today (yesterday it was really watery) and she didn't like it as much - it was funny! One thing she did like to do was to get the rice on her lips and then blow a raspberry... and fling rice all over Adam and I - haha!!
OK, so what do you guys think we should try next week?... the locals here actually start with dal (lentils)... but I'm not sure about that... Did you guys do fruit or vegetables first? What was the first fruit or veggie you did?
haha!! This is fun!

that's so fun... i'm with you i think the lentils should wait. ha! with my first children they had us start on fruits but now they've changed and said to start with veggies. with my last one thought i still started with fruit. ha! applesauce is what i started with. but then the next week i started a veggie, i think carrots. he liked it all except green beans. i look forward to hearing all about it. the fun has begun. he he he....

She has got the best expressions! I love it!!!

We gave Emma food for the first time on Thursday too! She was lreally trying hard to grab food, plates forks, whatever, anytime they were near her - so we decided to give it a whirl!

Lets, see - as far as the order... as a second food we love bananas or avacado. I have this book called Supper Baby Food that I have used for both K&M and Jake. Its all about making your own abby food - its a real informative book! If you want I can list the order on my blog that we kind of follow - just let me know!

btw - love the bib!

She's growing up so fast! I know my sister started fruits with her first and when it was time for her to have veggies she wanted nothing to do with them (Who could blame her - going from sweets to veggies). But I know every child is different!

We did veggies. But I can't remember which one first it was either sweet potato, squash (we can only find it for like a month and it was that month) or carrots. I agree on waiting on the lentils. I really liked this website: http://www.wholesomebabyfood.com/ and followed their age guidelines...they also have good thoughts and recipes on homemade food.

Fun stuff...love feeding those little babies! My boys ate pretty much anything I offered. Some of our first food were bananas,sweet potatoes,carrots,....all of them are pretty sweet really. I never game them straight fruit or veges, whatever fruit or vege we were having just got mixed with the rice or oatmeal cereal. Yummers!

The 2nd and 3rd pictures are way cute...it looks like she's doing a Hazelnut impression:)

Big question... did her poop smell worse after the rice cereal? I've been warned that it changes with "solid" foods!

Sweet potatoes or bananas would be my route...but I'm only basing that on what IIIII would want pureed, not on any real life "giving it to baby" experience:)

I'm pretty sure we did veggies first- I think green beans or peas or something. She liked them...till we got to fruits. Oh well she eats them all now.

I used the wholesome baby food website too. They have a lot of good ideas.

So CUTE!!! I love that she tried to steal the spoon! With Caroline I gave her green beans first and to this day it is her favorite veggie. She will eat them in any form. Jack on the other hand had bananas first and wont touch anything green. hmmmmm

I love the bib! I don't know if you should listen to me since my baby is tiny, but here's what we gleaned from a variety of sources...

1.) stick with JUST cereal and lentils (so daal should be fine, without added seasonings and veggies) until 6 months (gestational age), or sitting up WELL, or doubled birth-weight (but that's only for full-term babies, so I don't know what the "rule" is with aashini. breastfed babies do better with oatmeal than rice, typically (less constipation issues) but if she does fine I wouldn't worry about it - nathan does fine with rice now, although it really stopped him up at first.

2.) start with orange/yellow veggies (easier to digest), and/or prunes if baby has trouble passing cereal.

3.) then do green veggies

4.) THEN do sweet stuff (like fruit)

5.) Double your monthly baby wipe budget, and have fun! :)

So many good ideas! Because of reading your blog, I think I'm going to buy some lentils to try with Archie tomorrow. (Of course, he's already 7 mo.) It seems like Erin G. and I have used a similar food introduction pattern. So far, Archie hasn't rejected any food. He definitely likes the sweet stuff best, though, so I'm glad we started with veggies. I also like the www.wholesomebabyfoods.com site. It includes foods you don't think about everyday like eggplant (which Archie LOVES).

alwaysjoyful - if you like the idea of feeding your son more unusal foods so he doesn't get stuck into food ruts later, try avocado. it's easy to smash up, has heart-healthy fat (also good for baby brains!), and packs a lot of calories (our son's a little underweight, so that's been helpful). To make it smoother when you puree it, add some pineapple juice (good for digestion too). juice might also help smooth out the lentils, too. nathan likes prune and pineapple juice best. happy cooking!

Be careful when trying to freeze avocado-it turns brown. I would make a whole bunch of baby food on sunday and freeze it in ice trays for the rest of the week but with avocados I would just mash it up right then and there. Its so soft anyway that its easy.

yeah the pineapple juice will help with the brown thing too - the acid or something. the people on tv say the brown doesn't hurt you (like with apples) - it's just not pretty. when I make guac I put lemon juice in it to prevent that... but I don't think babies are supposed to have citrus (right?)... anyway if I mix prune juice into nathan's avocado instead of pineapple juice, it turns it brown anyway. he doesn't care!

i'm pretty sure we did veggies first, but the sweet ones...carrots, sweet potatoes, etc. when i started with the green ones, they got a bite of veggies and we chased it with a bite of fruit. crazy, huh? oh well, elijah will now eat anything that doesn't eat him first. he has developed a love for green peas though he didn't care for the baby food version. i think he likes them because they're kinda fun to play with before he actually eats them! :)

I'm slow in commenting, but I've always started with green veggies (green beans, zucchini, etc). Mostly because they have the least flavor on their own. Then I've moved to carrots and sweet potatoes and then fruits--apples and bananas first. I also don't give my babies a whole lot of carrot or orange because I don't want them to have an orange glow to their skin!! Sara F already told you about the website I use for age guidelines and ideas, too! I also has lots of articles about starting dairy, cooking carrots (nitrates or something), freezing homemade food, etc. Have fun!

I froze the avocado in slices and then the plan was to thaw it and then mash it up when I needed it, but Keely wasn't too thrilled and we were getting out of avocado season but I don't think it browned too bad that way.

Also, we don't have a microwave...so for easy thawing I would put the frozen cubes in a glass bowl into a mug of hot water and it would thaw pretty quickly or in a double broiler...I did one of those methods if I forgot to do it slowly in the fridge.

Eden did bananas!! woohoo!! she LOVED em! although, beware...digested bananas are totally weird. looks like black worms.eeeesh. (and can ruin bibs, so don't use a favorite bib when she tries em!) good luck!

Feeding time with Ella always took three spoons, one for the floor, one for Ella and one for the person with the food.
